Behr Country

Behr Country, as told by Wilfred J Behr.

Behr Country originated from humble beginnings on a quarter of land that came to be known as "Teddy Behr Hill" by the locals and most neighboring towns. It was located 1 mile east of St. Peters Colony and seven miles north of Lajord, Saskatchewan, Canada. A Roman Catholic community, home to the shrine of our Lady of Lourdes, Teddy Behr Hill was home to Theodore and Mary Behr and there 6 children. Elizabeth, Vincent, Marlene, Louise, Roy, and Wilfred.

Ted was born in Muhlhausendorf, Russia August 28th 1908, he emigrated to Canada in December, 1927 accompanied by his sister Elizabeth. Passage was prepaid by Gottlieb Fahlman of Holdfast, Saskatchewan who agreed to employ Ted for one year in return for his passage to Canada. There he met Mary Wollbaum when she went to work in the home of her uncle Gottlieb, they married February 13, 1939 at St. Peters Parish, Kronau, Sask. Ted was 31 and Mary was 25 years old. After they were married they continued to live in Holdfast for a few years until they bought the home quarter from Mary's parents. John and Elizabeth Wollbaum (Fahlman), which would later become known as "Teddy Behr Hill". This is where they raised their six children on just  three quarters of land. Ted died October 13th, 1963 Mary sold the farm and in the summer of 1964 with her two youngest sons Roy and Wilfred she moved to Regina where she lived until her death July 5th, 1986.

Four of us kids went back to St. peters Colony in 2003 for the home coming pilgrimage of our Lady of Lourdes. A reunion for anyone that had lived in the community, it was at this reunion we learned that our old homestead is still known as "Teddy Behr Hill" by the young of the community.

The six children now reside at:  Betty (Charlie); Regina Sask. - Vince (Qwen); A farm in Elk Point, Alberta - Marlene; Red Deer, Alberta - Louise (Rick); Pilot Butte Sask. - Roy (Bev); A farm north of Dysart Sask. - Wilfred; A farm south of Yorkton Sask.

The six children of Teddy Behr Hill started having reunions some 28 years ago and for the last 10 years have been holding one every two years on the August long weekend,  along with there children and there children's children, and some of their first cousins have also attended for the last three reunions.

The name "Behr Country" came from a play of the Ford Commercial "This is Ford country, what do you drive" a few words were changed over a few drinks and you know the rest. A Behr Country flag was created for Wilfred by Marlene's daughter Terri Ropchan (Allsen) and the flag has been flown at almost every reunion since. The six children would like to see these reunions continue in the hope that the extended family will stay in touch which is why this website was created. Anyone in the family that has some news to pass along to the family from births, deaths, weddings, vacations, information on the next reunion etc. can contact Jason Behr at jbehr@shaw.ca and he will be happy  to post it on the site and alert all by E-Mail to anyone who have an E-Mail address listed on the site. So lets stay in touch, especially the young ones that are graduating, getting married, having children or traveling the world. Send Jason your information and pictures or any changes to your E-Mail address, street address, phone number etc. for yourself or any members of your family.

And please let everyone in your family know about this website. We hope to see you at the reunion and hear from you on the website.
